Plovers are on several endangered lists. Plover nests are depressions in the sand and they lay up to 4 eggs. Chicks are very small when hatched, about the size of a cotton ball, and difficult to spot due to their coloring which blends in with the sand. They shelter under their parents when young as they are unable to regulate their body temperatures after hatching. When Plovers are startled, they crouch down on the sand and freeze.
