Cattle Egret in Breeding Plumage, St. Augustine, FL

Cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) are short, compact birds compared to other egrets with shorter, thicker bills.  Cattle egrets hunt small animals and insects on grassy fields as opposed to hunting for fish along lake edges. These egrets can be found in southern or tropical pastures chasing the insects disturbed by the movement of cattle or large machinery. They nest in colonies with other egrets and herons.
