Great Egret, St. Augustine, FL

Great Egrets (Ardea Alba), were prized for their feathers as hat decorations and many were killed off in the early 1900s. Conservation efforts have restored these birds but in the southern US, their numbers are affected by the loss of nesting habitats. Egrets roost in colonies in trees close to large lakes with abundant reeds or near wetlands.
